Lamai sits 25–30 minutes south of the airport on the ring road and has a full centre of its own: supermarkets, pharmacies, massage shops, exchange booths, dozens of cafés and a nightlife scene noticeably simpler and rougher than Chaweng's. On Sundays the main street turns into one of the island's best night markets. At the southern end of the beach stand the Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks — 'grandfather and grandmother' — the district's postcard sight.
The beach runs about four kilometres: white sand, a gentle entry and plenty of room even in February. Like Chaweng, this east-facing coast catches the northeast swell, so December to February brings days with real shorebreak, while summer is usually calm and swimmable. There are rocks and currents at both ends of the bay — don't swim out there. Between Chaweng and Lamai you pass the Lad Koh viewpoint and the tiny Silver Beach cove.
