Bophut

Fisherman's Village — a former fishing hamlet of wooden shophouses with boutique hotels, a Friday night market and brunch cafés. Calmer than Chaweng, sheltered from the winter swell, ten minutes from the airport.

The island's second resort: a proper centre with bars and shops, a Sunday night market and the Hin Ta and Hin Yai rocks. Chaweng's infrastructure for about 20% less, 25–30 minutes from the airport.

A long, calm beach on the north coast and the island's main long-stay base: cheap rentals, a Thursday market, yoga schools and cafés. The price of the quiet is a pronounced tide.

Bang Rak

The Big Buddha district and the piers for Koh Phangan and Koh Tao, five minutes from the airport. Swimming is mediocre — coarse sand and boat traffic — but the logistics are the best on the island.

Thongson Bay

Quiet coves on the northeast headland: hillside villas, a panorama of the gulf and virtually no infrastructure. A scooter is essential — Chaweng is 15 minutes away, the airport about 12.

Chaweng Noi

Chaweng's southern bay behind the Lad Koh headland: the same white sand, but quieter and greener. Hillside resort residences, 5–10 minutes from central Chaweng.

Taling Ngam

The southwest corner facing the Ang Thong marine park: calm water, coconut plantations and virtually no tourists. The lowest prices in the catalog, but the airport is about 50 minutes away.

Lipa Noi

The west coast: flat water year-round, a very shallow entry and the island's best sunsets. Ideal with toddlers — but Chaweng and the airport are nearly an hour away and the tide goes far out.

Bang Por

The quiet northwest: a snorkelling reef close to shore, seafood restaurants on the sand and only a handful of villas on the whole beach. Housing runs above the island average — almost everything is beachfront.

Hua Thanon

A Muslim fishing village on the southeast coast: boats drawn up on the sand, a seafood market and no tourism at all. The catalog holds only hillside pool villas with a view.

Thong Krut

The island's southern tip, with a pier where boats leave for Koh Tan and Koh Madsum. Shallow sea, village life, about 20 minutes to central Lamai.

Plai Laem

The northeast cape with the Wat Plai Laem temple and Choeng Mon bay next door. Expensive villas and sea-view residences, ten minutes from the airport.

Nathon

Samui's capital and port: mainland ferry piers, the hospital, banks and a morning market. No beach in the usual sense — but all the island's admin and sunsets over the gulf.
